A Ginkgo in the Pot
Kim Heung-Sook writes about the ginkgo tree that found her:
One day last summer, I noticed tiny green sprouts on the stick, which, as time went by, gradually gained the fan shape of ginkgo leaves. There had been a couple of maidenhair trees outside my previous home, and a naked seed from one of them seemed to have blown in through the wire-netted window and found a home in the pot.

Ginkgo
I like Harry McDaniel’s piece called Ginkgo both because it’s unusual and because of how it fits into its space. Mr. McDaniel says:
I created Ginkgo to fit an unusual architectural space. The home has a combined living room, dining room, and kitchen with a 24’ cathedral ceiling. A 10’ X 10’ atrium extends upward from the center of the cathedral ceiling to a 32’ ceiling directly over the dining room table.
Since the view is primarily upward, I oriented the pieces horizontally. The tensioned cords of each piece create a sense of surface, while allowing viewers to see through to the next piece. The cords create a variety of patterns and shadows as the pieces rotate. From the center of each piece a brushed aluminum vane extends downward catching air movement and reflecting light.
The bottom piece provides a focal point and a measure of the movement of the upper pieces. It is constructed of cherry and brushed aluminum like the upper pieces and it contains curves relating to the curved aluminum vanes of the upper pieces, yet it is a very different, contrasting form.
You can find more photos at Mr. McDaniel’s web site.

Using ginkgo in a kitchen backsplash
Hi Kelly, I am also a lover of ginkgo trees. I planted one in our backyear four years ago, and it is going strong and beautiful. I saw one for the first time in the seventies in Atlanta GA in front of the High Museum of Art, and I’ve been entranced by them ever since. My husband and I are remodeling our kitchen, and I would love to incorporate the ginkgo on our tile backsplashes. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you, Carol Ann Narozniak Paducah KY USA

Ginkgo Fridays: DIY
HGTV has a cute idea using leaves and flowers to create a place setting:
Place gingko leaves and a brightly colored flower on a clear plate, then cover with a second clear plate.
Although they use ginkgo leaves in their example, you can use other leaves to create this effect.

Another ginkgo Christmas ornament
Here’s a set of Christmas ornaments I found on eBay. Originally available from Still Life, this set of five ornaments includes one ginkgo leaf, one holly leaf, one grape leaf, and two pumpkins. They’re the real thing, the leaves electroplated in 24K gold and the pumpkins in copper.
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
I’ve recently been inspired to start a new feature here at Ginkgo Dreams called “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow,” where I’ll feature auction items that capture my attention. Not every item I post is still available for purchase (that’s never a criterion), but items at eBay and other auction sites are especially transient and some of them are worthy of mention.

Christmas at Ginkgo Dreams
The holidays are upon us, and fortunately there are ways for you ginkgo-lovers to incorporate some ginkgo into your decorating scheme.
The pewter ginkgo leaf ornament pictured above is available from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House Complex.
If you haven’t already blown your Christmas decorating budget, you may want to take a look at Beaucoup‘s leaf ornaments (also in pewter). They have a minimum order of 12, and each ornament comes in its own gift box.

Finally, Herb Fresh sells ornaments made with real ginkgo leaves, with your choice of finish in 18k gold or iridescent copper.
